Brook Rosser
My mixed-media paintings explore symbolism, memory, faith, and the wonder of the world around us through layered visual narratives. Inspired by the childhood hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, I create imagined worlds where familiar forms become symbols of joy, transformation, and hope.
Working in oil and acrylic paint, using torn decorative and metallic papers, foil, recycled labels, and other found materials, I build richly textured surfaces through layering and collage on canvas, wood panels and acrylic sheets. Trees, flowers, animals, angels, and other recurring forms emerge through paint and assemblage which become visual metaphors rather than literal representations. Each painting evolves through a process of building, revealing, and rediscovering, inviting viewers to uncover new narratives and details over time.
In today’s contemporary art world, there is often an emphasis on irony, critique, or darkness and my work is unapologetically joyful celebrating love, faith, nature, memory, and transformation. Drawing from personal experience, mythology, and imagination, I weave together symbols that reflect the cycles of life—love, joy, passion, renewal, growth, and hope. Rather than illustrating a single story, my paintings create space for multiple interpretations and personal connections.
As a native Texan, storytelling is central to my practice. My paintings are filled with playful imagery, vibrant color, and richly layered textures that create visual narratives infused with symbolism and wonder. While elements of the natural world often appear, they serve as metaphors for resilience, abundance, and the interconnectedness of life.
I believe creativity is a gift from God—a way of celebrating the beauty found in both the extraordinary and the everyday. Through my work, I hope to create paintings that spark curiosity, evoke joy, and invite viewers to discover their own stories within each layered composition.
I live and work in San Antonio, Texas as a designer and mixed media painter. I received my BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin and my MFA in Painting and Drawing from Texas Tech University. My paintings and drawings have been exhibited in both group and solo exhibitions as well as juried shows.
My art has been exhibited in the Texas area at galleries and venues such as AnArte Gallery in San Antonio, Submerge Gallery in Austin, University Autonoma de Mexico, St. Mary’s University, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Tyler, and Arizona State Universities Institute for Humanities and Research, Blue Star Art Complex and other institutions.
